History

Begun in 1718 as a mission called the Mission San Antonio de Valero, the name eventually became the Alamo and while there were several other Spanish missions to come, the city’s real growth came from a settlement begun in 1731. Begun as a first step towards colonizing Texas, many families in San Antonio now proudly trace their roots here from the Spanish Canary Islands.

Today, San Antonio is steeped in a rich Spanish culture, as well as many others, becoming a city accented by its long and varied heritage. San Antonio is one of the most famous centers for art museums, theaters and tourist attractions and will always have something entertaining going on for both visitors and residents to enjoy!

Come visit and join the celebration! It won’t matter if you live here or not, whether you’re visiting or are a long time resident, San Antonio will embrace you with open arms!
